Our Story

Autumnal Tips for Rodent Control on Farms

Rats congregate around and in farm buildings where there’s food and water – that’s also where they breed in spring and summer, which could lead to infestations in autumn and winter.

As temperatures drop, farmers need to have a plan in place to control rats before they find shelter indoors, such as in grain stores, silage clamps, bale and feed stores.

We have a few tips to help you get ready.

  • Tidy up around the farm steading to give rats and mice fewer places to create homes. Remove pallets, old machinery, rubble, etc.
  • Seal off as many entry points to buildings as possible.
  • Remove any materials that rodents can use for nesting, wood shavings, straw, hay, etc.
  • Store bags of feed in rat proof containers where possible.

Even if all the above measures are adhered to, it is still likely that you will require rat poison. At Hamilton Brothers, we have a selection of poisons available for both the professional and amateur.

Farm Assured premises have access to a range of poisons in different sizes; these include loose grain, place packs, blocks and foam. Smaller tubs and packs are available for the domestic / non-Farm Assured customer. We also supply rat boxes and traps.

To adhere to the Farm Assured scheme, print and fill in the following form and bring it with you to our Tarbolton depot: CRRU_Aligned_Farm_Assurance_Scheme_Document_3_For_farm_assurance_schemes
