Carabiners are an essential piece of safety equipment when climbing and rigging.
A carabiner is a metal oval loop which can be opened on one side by a gate. There are two main types of carabiner: locking (e.g. screwgate) and non-locking (e.g. wire gates).
Locking carabiners do what it says on the tin and prevent the gate opening accidentally. These carabiners are typically used when belaying or at anchor points. Non-locking carabiners are often used in quickdraws or as runners on a route, and can also be used to rack gear.
